The Sunday
Created specifically for "in the air," curator Lu Mingjun's 2023 group show for Spurs Gallery, Sunday combines the power of modern creation with the solemnness of traditional religious ceremonies. In the exhibition, a beautifully decorated cart attracts the attention of the audience. An electronic candle was placed on the cart, emitting a soft glow as if it were illuminating a sacred book. However, when the audience gets closer and peers inside, they see that the cart is not a traditional bible, but a pedestal with a video installation. The content shown in the video is not traditional religious eachings, but my thoughts on modern society, technological development and artificial intelligence discussed with ai. In a thought-provoking way, this dialogue contrasts instrumental rationality with value ationality and explores the opposition and fusion between modernity and tradition.
Religious ceremony, as a traditional ritual expression, has finally been replaced by the rationality of modern society. People's religious belief and ritual participation may gradually decrease, while the utilitarian and fast-paced lifestyle of modern society makes religious ceremony seem unfamiliar and
unnecessary. Now, artificial intelligence has caused artists to worry that human beings themselves will repeat the mistake of faith collapse. Algorithms, a god more powerful than capitalism, seem set to replace reason and take back control of humanity.
In the work, religious rituals are reexplored and redefined. They combine with the technology,
innovation and artificial intelligence of modern society to bring audiences a whole new way of experiencing and thinking. The exhibition seeks to challenge viewers' preconceived notions about religious rituals and to prompt them to consider the role and meaning of faith in the contemporary world. By dialectically exploring the relationship between artificial intelligence, modern society and ritual, the work raises many thought-provoking questions. It encourages viewers to examine the impact of AI on creativity and originality, as well as the evolution and reshaping of ritual in contemporary society. The exhibition opens a space for reflection and discussion to explore the tension and interaction between modern technology and traditional values.
