Auf 1969
1969 was the Chinese Year of the Rooster, the Chinese zodiac sign for my parents. The symbol of "fighting chicken" in the work is used by me as a metaphor for the social landscape of China in the second half of the 1990s: full of vitality and competition. The family separation experienced in hildhood and the rapidly increasing divorce rate of urban families are evidence of the disintegration of the traditional patriarchal family structure as China moved from reform and opening up to the market economy at that period. The traditional socialist family space, full of inclusiveness in the past, has gradually become an abstract code after the privatization of housing. The spread of modern marriage laws has made the family home a bargaining chip in property negotiations.
This work presents a scene of cockfighting in a more dramatic way, but because the competition in modern society has long been transformed from a head-breaking boxing match to a speed ompetition, the two chickens can only rush to the front endlessly, but they can only stay in place on
this inch of land.
